Hi,
i have already posted on other tribes, and i'm now just real confused. I am trying to figure out where to live in the Bay Area, as i'm moving there soon, and whereas i was gonna live in Oakland to save money on rent, some people are saying i'm better off paying more to live in the city and dumping the car. thing is, i am going to be working till 2-3 am 3 nights a week, so public transport is not an option at that time of night...so i'd have to cab home, and whereas people say that's ok if you are in the city - other people are telling me that you can't use cabs as a regular form of transport, as they are really expensive. i know it would be if i was cabbing back to Oakland, but what about just cabbing back to somewhere within the city?

Re: I'M CONFUSED ABOUT TRANSPORT IN SF - HELP!
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 4:54 PMIf you need to be in SF past midnight you need to either live in SF or have a car. Its a sad and pitiful fact about our public transit reality. There is a late night AC transit (Bus) transbay option, but it runs very infrequently and is sketchy in terms of where you have to catch it and where you will end up. It can be pretty amusing though. My friend calls it the "Drunk Bus" that is about right..
Cabbing back to Oakland will quickly eat up any rent savings you would have living in Oakland. I have this same dilemma as a working musician, but I need a car usually to tote my upright bass and/or amp around so I'm screwed anyway.
Cabs in the city are not so bad cost-wise. If you live in the city (most parts anyway) you will hate having a car b/c you will spend 45 minutes parking and/or have to wake up to move your car before street sweeping/meters kick in all the time.
Good luck and welcome to the Bay Area. -

Re: I'M CONFUSED ABOUT TRANSPORT IN SF - HELP!
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 1:56 PMThe good thing about driving across the bridge at 3 am is that the traffic isn't bad then. Going to the city between 5:00pm and 7pm is pretty time consuming, though. You can save money living in the east bay, but you won't save much without living in a neighborhood of questionable character. Most people opt to save money by living with roommates in the city (SF), especially by living with someone who has had rent-control for years. -

Re: I'M CONFUSED ABOUT TRANSPORT IN SF - HELP!
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 11:32 PMalso i ride my bike everywhere I go in the city, including and especially places that I go at 2am because transit is less frequent then. I wasn't an avid bicyclist until I moved to SF and figured out it is the best way to get around this town. the hills make it seem like it is daunting but if you live ina fairly flat place it is pretty easy to get around the hills, and basically avoid them all together. night time biking is also good because you don't have to walk alone from and to transit. I agree with the other folks said about needing to live in sf if you are going to be working here - bart stops at midnight and that is a travesty.
