couple working in napa and palo alto...where to live?

Hey all, I'm new here, so thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

So, I'm taking a job in palo alto and my SO is taking a job in napa. How the *heck* are we going to find a place to live that we can commute from?

Her job is a 40-hour/week, 4-day a week kind of job; mine is 50-55 hrs a week, lots of face time in the office, kind of on call too.

We make good money, so cost isn't too much of an issue (within reason) and we're not looking to buy, just to rent. I *hate* commuting, but she doesn't mind so much.

Any suggestions?

Hello.

In the months to come, my partner and I will be seeking a home in the Oakland Area. My job is in Oakland, his is near the San Carlos Caltrain station. He is game for a longer commute with minimal transfers. Below I've noted what it seems our options are. If anyone has thoughts or experience related to this, we'd love to hear about it :)

--the Dublin/Pleasanton Bart goes all the way to Millbrae, then he easily gets the Caltrain at Millbrae. This looks like the least transfers and biggest no-brainer solution. (we'd live near the Lake Merritt BART... I guesss he could do one more BART transfer, if we lived near Rockridge or something)
--It looks like Oakland buses do go to SF, but not necessarily near, say, the 4th and King Caltrain station... (help?)
--It doesnt look like the Amtrak train thing is particularly helpful to our cause, but maybe someone knows something I dont?
--I've heard lore of spots in Oakland where people just pick people up to drive into the city... is is this for real?

I'M CONFUSED ABOUT TRANSPORT IN SF - HELP!

Hi,
i have already posted on other tribes, and i'm now just real confused. I am trying to figure out where to live in the Bay Area, as i'm moving there soon, and whereas i was gonna live in Oakland to save money on rent, some people are saying i'm better off paying more to live in the city and dumping the car. thing is, i am going to be working till 2-3 am 3 nights a week, so public transport is not an option at that time of night...so i'd have to cab home, and whereas people say that's ok if you are in the city - other people are telling me that you can't use cabs as a regular form of transport, as they are really expensive. i know it would be if i was cabbing back to Oakland, but what about just cabbing back to somewhere within the city?

Monterey Salinas Transit Bus Line #22 "Big Sur"

This is listed as going from the Monterey Transit Center
to Big Sur Nepenthe.

Does the bus have a bike rack available or is it heavily used?

It is listed as, and is it really only run between
Memorial day and Labor day?

I want to bus it to Nepenthe and then pedal to Ragged Point.

Anyone done this day trip before?

New here

Soooo, with the possible exception of 'Test' I make the tenth male member (no pun intended) of this tribe.

Being in Oakland, I have regularly commuted to the Pennisula on weekends. Here is the route.

Bike to 12th ST BART
!2th St - Powell = $2.55
bike to 4th & King Caltrain
Caltrain to Menlo Park = $4.50
Bike to location.

Takes between 1.5 and 2 hours

Then I return, so the total is around $15.00 and 3-4 hours of communting.

Probably a 2 -to- 2.5 hour SOV round trip, and 130 miles or so. @.30/mile = $39.00

Therefore I pay around:

Driving = $0.26/minute
Commuting = $0.08/minute

By request: a post!

What is your commute and which modes of transportation do you use?

I bike from Redwood City near Edgewood and The Alameda to the Dumbarton br. My company has a shuttle across the bridge, so I take that to Newark where I work. 14 miles total, 7 by bike. Takes me 45-60 minutes.

On the bike, I have an earbud in one ear to listen to the radio - usually NPR. Book or radio (or doze) on the shuttle.

Actually, I did miss it, so I got a ride to millbrae. That 2 hour gap is brutal between the 10pm and the midnight train. Too many cars involved in that trip.

Right now, my commute is about 30 minutes, which barely gives me enough time to listen to the BBC and a little bit of NPR/PRI.

Once you've heard "Marketplace," "The California Report," "Day to Day," "Europe Today," "Analysis," "From Our Own Correspondent", etc. etc., how could you ever give up the commute?!?!
